Few joys in life 9-16-03

kilroyAlright, I just went out and saw American Splendor, a film most of my friends would never consider seeing, about a comic I've never read, in a theater the vast majority of this town has never heard of. And, unlike god-knows-how-much of the moviegoing populace, I went alone.
The movie, for reference, was really good. But driving home, I was struck by the feeling I had. Sort of a warm, safe, contemplative feeling; one I frequently get when I see a movie alone. I was happy.
As far as I know, there are three things in my life that regularly make me happy: absorbing media, creating stories, and teaching. There are other things that give me great joy, energy, and a belief in humanity... but as far as your common or garden variety satisfaction goes, it's pretty much those three. And out of the three, media is the easiest. Even in my most distracted and depressed moods, I can dive into a good book or a good movie.
I'm not sure what that says about me as a person. Reflecting on it, I could almost certainly do the same thing with people: there's friends I have to suit every mood but a few. But for lonely nights, it'll still be movies. And books.
