A word on seasons
Jul. 30th, 2005 07:20 pmPeople have asked me on a number of occasions what my favorite season is, and I have difficulty answering except to say "not summer." I love the colors of spring, the crispness of fall, the curling geometries of snow. I even like summer when I don't hate it-- nothing like big, big blue skies.
A few years ago I realized that out of the four traditional elements I identified as Air. You can take this as matching my seasonal preferences-- Air I believe matches with winter, the center of my liked seasons. But that sort of misses the point. I like spring and fall better-- I like the liminal seasons, the ones full of motion where things are changing into other things. Which I suppose matches my element as well, in a way.
Spring has some baggage-- since I've been living on a school schedule forever, Spring is the season of ending, of panic and stress. It's the season of "Can I make it just a little longer"-- my winter, if you will. Which I suppose makes fall my summer, when my energy is highest and my hopes are clearest.
The air is cooling, the winds are blowing, and it looks like I have a full social calendar this evening. Life is good. For any of you that need strength during the coming of darkness, just call me. This next few months is when I burn brightest.
