As I was puzzling over what to call this journal, I thought about weeds: tenacious and disdained and and vibrant and absolutely amazing at finding the tiniest little crevices to turn into footholds. That sounded like what I need to be for a while. Poison me, chop me down, uproot me, and I'll just keep coming back to find the sun.

I liked the image! But calling this my "Weed Journal" seemed like it would give the wrong impression.

Fortunately, I've been doing a lot of gardening recently. We stopped using herbicides a few years ago now, and as a result a bunch of the invasive species have sprung up in the lawn and gardens. Some of them I rip up wherever I find them. Our morning glory is my botanical nemesis, and I'll gladly consign any spiky-leafed dandelions to compost. But some of them I let grow-- the ones that keep a low profile, that appeal to my aesthetics or my sense of whimsy.

One of those is a clover that's started intermingling with the Kentucky bluegrass that makes up most of our lawn. I googled a photo of it on my phone, and it turns out the type has a bunch of different names-- including shamrock, which pleased my Irish ancestors. But my favorite was "White Clover," so named for the flowers I've seen all my life without knowing what they were. It's simple and beautiful and grows bloody everywhere. That's a weed I can aspire to.

So "White Clover Journal" it is. I'll probably start abbreviating it to WCJ, but I'll grab a couple of photos from my lawn for icons just to remind you what the abbreviation stands for.

Now we just have to wait and see what grows.

A friend of mine once told me of a custom in the Jewish blogosphere of leaving a virtual pebble on a post, much like the ones left of gravestones. They are a way of signifying that the commenter has nothing profound to add, but has read the post, is thinking about the content.

So: (o).
