Verdict: Keep. (40/97)

There's not much to say about the book as a whole: it's not really a themed collection. The quality of individual stories is generally pretty high. As is often the case in anthologies, there are the annoying author-plates with commentary between stories. What is worth noting is that all the stories are original to this collection: some of them have been reprinted elsewhere subsequently, but none of them were poached from other sources when the book was published. Definitely worth having on the shelf.

Random comments on individual stories (in book order):
* Kit Reed is a weird, weird person.
* Still really need to read some Tim Powers novels.
* "Six Hypotheses" by Joyce Carol Oates is one of the most aggravating stories I've read in a while.
* "The Silver Dragon" by Elizabeth A. Lynn is a faerie tale or a myth set in a universe of hers I love, and a good one at that.
* "The Following" by P.D. Cacek was sad enough to hurt. A lot.
* Charles de Lint: still awesome.
* "Coming Across" by Harry Turtledove is a neat exploration of elves and immortality.
* "The Problem of Susan" by Neil Gaiman is... unique. Narnia isn't quite the same anymore.
* "Watchfire" by Feist and Wurts is still sticking with me. It's simple, but it resonates like a bell.
* Joe R. Lansdale made me pretty uncomfortable with his story. It's like "The Brave Little Toaster" but with sex.
* "Golden City Far" by Gene Wolfe is an awesome capstone story. It's the one you want to ride into the sunset with.
