* If I have any OTP, it's the Seventh Doctor and Ace. It crosses over the line of love and appreciation I have for a lot of onscreen pairings into something genuinely deeper. I could watch them forever, truly. Boy do I need an icon.
* If in future I ever have to explain the Seventh Doctor to someone, I'll hand them this story. It's the essence of everything he is: mysterious, subtle, big picture, a little frustrated, and dark. Very, very dark.
* I think that we all tend to forget two important things that elevate Doctor Who from just a good show to the cultural icon that it is. First, it is quite possibly the most ambitious premise for a show... well, ever. Even without regeneration. I think of other science fiction shows, and for each one I come up with there's something Doctor Who does that they just can't. Not only that, but from the very first episode the show has been relentless in exploring new horizons and trying new things. This is a show that can do anything, and it makes the audience believe it.
Second, for all the low-budget effects and double-helpings of cheese, the writing and acting are usually good and frequently bloody amazing. This is a show that understands characters and dialogue, that can sketch out believable people ludicrously quickly and provide everyone with interesting things to say. The stories seamlessly mix comedy and drama because both usually come from the characters-- for all the artificiality of the situations, the reactions of the people in them almost always feel genuine.
