Verdict: The author is trying so hard to be sort of folksy back-country New England that she utterly buries the characters and plot in linguistic acrobatics and obvious stereotypes. This might be fun for a few pages as a humorous exercise, but not for a whole book. (9.5/26 keepers)

Verdict: Texture problems. This is clearly trying to be a serious, literary novel. It's gothic and impenetrable, probably full of metaphysics and social commentary and utterly lacking in compelling characters. If you liked The Handmaid's Tale you're welcome to try it, but I will courteously pass. (9.5/27 keepers)
