So, I decided a long time ago that any series gets at least a three episode shot from me. There are some series that are good out of the gate, but there are a lot that stumble and then pick themselves up. Gungrave is a classic example; the present-day action zombie plot stinks, but the flashback mafia plot was absolutely superb, and if I hadn't stayed until the end of the first disc I never would have found it. Torchwood's another good example on a slightly longer timeline; things start getting good around episode nine, but they do get good and stay there. I've been told by a reliable source that Stargate is the same way on an even LONGER timeline.

So, out of respect for the work, I must report that I found Birds of Prey got better around episode three. Not just a little better, but near-quantum-leap better. Acting started seeming genuine and showed a degree of chemistry. Fight choreography became creative and fight cinematography made it comprehensible. Writing did not suck. Essentially, if you take out the dippy opening sequence and the CG filler shots, eps 3 and 4 are nice, solid television. Not something I'd ever want to own, but certainly not a waste of time.

And it's nice to see someone who actually follows Rule #283. Not to mention having a handicapped heroine who actually gets out and does fieldwork-- including beating the crap out of someone with one of her extendo-sticks.

So, testing continues. As do the rules.

#289: Bad CG is never helped by vertiginously fast camera movements. Actually, almost no shot is helped by vertiginously fast camera movements. (Birds of Prey)
