Smallville
Feb. 17th, 2009 09:11 amSome reflections as I approach the end of the fourth season:
-- There really needs to be a statute of limitations on the number of personality-altering episodes a series is allowed. It's a cheap trick in any case, but Smallville has been abusing it mercilessly; out of 88 episodes there's something like 19 "let's have the characters be totally out of character for some external reason" shows, half of those in the fourth season alone. And I don't think I've gotten all of them.
-- Smallville Lois makes me so utterly, unreasonably happy. Partly it's because the show REALLY needed a woman who's not in love with Clark and is willing to make fun of him and challenge him, but I think I would squee on this character in other contexts too.
-- It seems like the showrunners don't plan for more than a season at a time; wise for a show on on a network on the edge of cancellation, but sort of annoying in the long term. I'm seeing them beginning to realize that they can't repeat seasons one and two over and over again, which is good; but they're sort of flailing at a bunch of different alternatives as opposed to taking one strongly developed new path.
-- Every. Single. Episode. I'm wishing he'd finally out to Chloe. As per the previous comment, I just want them to MOVE ON. I don't care about Lana and I probably never will at this point. But Clark and Chloe I want to see go new places.
