Coraline was really good. As Amy put it, "just the right mix of whimsy and macabre." I was genuinely creeped out on many occasions, and laughed from sheer joy at the flights of fancy in many others. And of course, the whole thing was just extraordinarily beautiful. Mr. Selick has the right idea when it comes to 3-D, too-- he doesn't push it, but it occasionally folds out at you in ways you weren't expecting (but are really appropriate given the story).

So go see it. Seriously, you'll be surprised and pleased.

In other news, in an attempt to understand what the heck my mother and sister are talking about, I've been going through Smallville from the beginning. I'm just breaking the ice on season three and so far the show has been... interesting. From a comics-nerd perspective, they're really developing a pretty neat alternate universe. And they're doing it exactly right; all the pieces are there and fit together in ways that make sense but are categorically not the same as the traditional continuity. The fact that I actually care about Clark Kent as a character also speaks volumes about the show.

It's got its flaws, yeah. It's a teen drama, which means that the mainspring of the show is a three-way romantic conflict that won't resolve itself until probably season five (and then probably with the wrong girl, imho). I'm getting a little tired of long, lingering shots set to popular music as well. But anything that touches the Luthors is pretty much gold, and I'd stay in the show just for Lex and Lionel at this point.
