Basically, it's "write a fanfic, get a fanfic," with an emphasis on obscure fanfics that you normally don't see. Lengths are manageable, you don't have to write a novel.
While trawling, I randomly found fanfic for The Great Mouse Detective, Gilgamesh (the actual Sumerian saga), Avatar: the Last Airbender, and Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
