So they relesased the Oscar nominees, and one of our local theaters is being kind enough to break out all their prints of the Best Picture-nominated films again (except Seabiscuit, which is already on video). So I decided that this year I would finally try to have seen every Best Picture nominee before the ceremony, so that I can kvetch about the Academy from a standpoint of actual information.

I actually ended up seeing Monster due to a scheduling mishap, so I'm expanding my mandate. I want to see as many of the nominated films as possible.

Things I've already seen include:
  • Pirates of the Carribean
  • Cold Mountain
  • Return of the King
  • American Splendor
  • Finding Nemo

My comments on those should be obvious to anyone who knows me, with the exception of Cold Mountain, which I hated. The reasons for that are another entry entirely, and would require me seeing the film again to fully articulate-- which I have no intention of ever paying money to do.

As to Monster... what a profoundly horrifying film. I was expecting bleak, but this far exceeded even my cynical expectations. Charlize Theron deserves any kudos people can chuck at her for making this project happen. Any film that can make me want to watch a horror movie to "cleanse my palate" deserves special mention. It's not that it's "too realistic"... it's exactly as realistic as some of the spectacular true-life happy stories that get filmed. It's just that I found myself thinking that previous sentence driving home from the theater. Repeatedly.

I will likely never see this film again, and for that I am glad.
