The Quest Continues 11-08-03
One of my subsidiary goals to meet this year was to boost myself up to 75% viewership of the AFI top 100 movies of all time list. I'm currently at 69 (from a start of around 53). Since July I've watched The Philadelphia Story, From Here to Eternity, The Wild Bunch, A Place in the Sun, On the Waterfront, All Quiet on the Western Front, and a host of other non-listed movies like Sleeper, The Thing, Dangerous Liasions, and Miller's Crossing.
Granted I still have a number of the biggies to go: Schindler's List, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, The Graduate, Ben Hur, Rocky... all of which I've seen bits of but never the entire thing. Still, how many Americans my age have seen, say, Lawrence of Arabia? Or Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? Or Stagecoach?
It's going to be hard to get that extra six in by the end of the year-- it's only about one a week, but I've got finals coming. Still, it's a goal worth pursuing. It makes me feel all cultured... and a real storyteller can never have too much culture.
