The Critic

The Critic

Picture:
A woman stands smiling proudly in the center, one hand on her hip and the other holding a switch with her thumb still on the button. A cable trails from the hand-unit down to the ground, where it splits and snakes off into the trees, the branchings eventually meeting up with freestanding flourescent lamps incongrously ringing the figure's clearing in the middle of the forest. In the background between the trees we can make out shadowy shapes of animals and other things, beautiful but hidden and only half-real. But in the clearing the lamps cast a clear, actinic light over everything and there are no animals. At the woman's feet are a pile of books, now readable in the darkness. However, the ring of lights does little to dispel the shadows on the woman's face.

Positive Influences:
The Critic is always willing to weigh in with an incisive, witty opinion on any occasion and for any reason. She is perceptive; she sees the problems in the world around her and is willing to both speak them aloud and make sure that others hear her. She is valued highly for her logic, rationality, and frankness, and can manipulate nearly any situation to her advantage.

Negative Influences:
The Critic fears constantly that she has lost some crucial--emotional--part of herself. She is largely unable to express her true feelings to others, and uses her urbanity to mask deeper insecurities. Moreover, her knowledge of the world makes it difficult for her to ever truly enjoy herself; she is plagued by the flaws she sees so readily in herself, others, and the world at large.
