Sean's Run at the Oscars III, 2-04-04
Lost in Translation tonight. That was absolutely worth my time. It's such an incredibly subtle, indirect movie... every shot, every facial expression, every line of dialogue contributes to the whole in some way. The feeling of alienation is absolutely priceless. And Scarlett Johansson is now officially added to the list of actresses that I fell in love with after only one movie.
This movie is, without question, better constructed than Return of the King. There's nothing wasted; this is what elegant filmmaking is supposed to be. But the scope here is so much smaller than RotK-- it would be literally impossible to do an elegant epic. Lost in Translation is perfect, but tight and quiet. Return of the King is sprawling, energetic, loud, and beautiful. I still think RotK should get Best Picture; Peter Jackson took on the behemoth and succeeded beyond everyone's wildest expectations. But if Lost in Translation wins, I will cry no bitter tears.
